The Free Open Source OS Syllable was designed primarily for the Pentium and compatible processors and its purpose was to create an easy-to-use desktop operating system for the home and small office users. The OS was built for speed and aims at a minimal hardware requirement, thus has a lots of potential for the future. The Free PC OS Software comes with a native web browser(ABrowse), which is WebKit-based, an email client (Whisper), a media player, IDE, and many other useful applications.

During the testing period, I was just amazed with the speed of the Open Source Syllable OS. It seemed faster than both the Windows and Linux! From the time the boot loader came up to the time the login prompt appeared was just around 6 seconds on my Core2Duo 3 Ghz with 1GB of DDR2 memory.

It took another second or less from the time I logged in to the time the desktop was ready. I think the computer’s POST (power-on self test) activities took longer than the OS took to boot. Applications seemed to take less than a second to come up which was definitely impressive. True, that I have never seen such responsiveness out of a stock install of any other desktop operating system.

A great feature of the OS is its simplicity. The Free PC OS Software has a simple, easy-to-understand interface, which is great. The OS has some basic, rudimentary controls, yet manages to include everything one would need to get up and running! The setup may not be highly configurable, but it scores on points such as, the desktop is uncluttered and easy to figure out. It was beacuse of this simplicity, that i was able to customise it in no time at all.

For running this Free PC OS Software comfortably, a Pentium 200 MHz with a minimum of 64M of RAM is required. The OS an also be squeezed into a smaller system though, but the results won’t be as ideal as you would want it to be. Around 300MB of hard drive space is usually fine for general use, however, it should be kept in mind that Syllable won’t install on any existing FAT/NTFS or ext2/3 partitions. Virtual machines and emulators (such as VMware and Bochs) can also run the OS with a bit of tweaking.

The Free Syllable Open Source Computer OS, is a mini sized, feature packed, simple and a high speed operating system and still needs some time before it enters the general market. Although, the software does suffer from a few glitches here and there ,that is mainly due to the fact that, its development is still not finished yet. But, else than that, the software would definitely not fail to impress you because afterall it is, what it promises to be!
