The Open Source FTP Software FileZilla, is a free, cross-platform FTP client. FileZilla is a small but powerful FTP client which includes a site manager to store all your connection details and logins, as well as an explorer style interface, that shows the local and remote folders which can be customized independently.
The Free Multiplatform FTP Client supported Windows, but became multiplatform from the version 3 onwards, after which it started supporting the Linux and the Mac OS X too. The site manager is detailed and allows an user to create a list of FTP sites along with their connection data, such as the port number to use, the protocol to use, and whether to use anonymous or normal logon. For normal logon, the username is saved and optionally the password.
The Free Cross Platform FTP Client also has a Message log that is displayed along the top of the window. It displays the console-type output showing the commands sent by FileZilla and the remote server’s responses.
The File and folder view is displayed under the message log and, provides a graphical interface for FTP. Users can navigate folders and view and alter their contents on both the local and remote machines using an Explorer-style tree interface. Users can drag and drop files between the local and remote computers easily using this feature.
Next in line is the Transfer queue which is displayed along the bottom of the window, and shows the real-time status of each queued or active file transfer. The FileZilla Open Source Cross Platform FTP Software has exclusive support for FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol and the IPv6. It effortlessly supports resume and transfer of large files ,that are greater than 4GB, and there is also a remote file editing feature built with the software. FileZilla also supports HTTP/1.1, SOCKS5 and the FTP-Proxy.
On a Windows system, you can always use the command-line FTP program, provided by Windows to transfer files. To install the Free FTP Software FileZilla, first save the download file to your local hard drive in a folder. Then unzip the downloaded file and you will see the content of FileZilla stored in the folder. In this folder double click on the filezilla.exe. This will open up the FileZilla main window and you are done!
