The Open Source Network IP Scanning Software Angry IP,  is a free, cross platform tool, for IP diagonistics. Although, the Free Network Scanner has a size quotient of approximately 100 kb, it still provides a multitude of functions such as, IP-range ping scans, simple port informations,and enables anyone with fundamental OSI-layer model knowledge to diagnose network problems easily.

 The GUI is straight forward and not at all complicated. The company has made the Free Network IP Scanner cross platform from the 3.xx versions onwards, before which, the installer was only for the windows envioronment.

As for the host specification, this Scanner can take a range where you need to give the start and end addresses, or you can specify a netmask for example 100.100.10.50, or provide it with classless Inter-Domain Routing notation for example /12, and it will set the end address based on the start and netmask.

The Free Multi Platform Network Scanner comes with a built in Favorites tab, with which you can store the IP ranges you scan most often, for example your local network ranges. It also has a highly desirable plugin functionality that allows you to add more features to its body thus, presenting greater posibilities in the long run! Users can use either the plugins that are available or, they can also incorporate plugins written by themselves.

This Cross Platform Network Scanner will live up to the expectation of most of its users I feel, due to many of the helpful features it provides, but, before you proceed to download the software, there is a word of caution for those of you using, security packages such as Mac Afee and Symantec on your computer. These softwares have branded this Free Network Scanner as “hacker tools” with their antivirus software and, if found, will delete it from your system .

 One of the feature that have made me like it more is this free scanner’s ability to narrow down the random IP generation, to a given base IP, and netmask. You can also set it up in a way that will allow you to right click on an IP address and run your own application, such as VNC or RemoteDesktop. I would definitely urge you to try the Free IP Network Scanner atleast once for yourself.
