Miranda IM  is one of the most flexible Free Windows IM Client and messaging  application, designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system. It  is distributed under the General Public License.

The  Free Windows Desktop Instant Messenger Miranda was first started by Roland Rabien on the February of  2000. At that time, it was a minimalist ICQ clone and was officially known as the Miranda ICQ. The first public release, version 0.0.1, was released on  February 6th in the year  2000. This release used LibICQ and had no support for message history, database, and plugins.

Unlike many other softwares, the Free Windows IM Client Miranda IM, is extermely light on the system resources and hence fast. The software doesn’t require any installation and, can be made to fit on a single floppy disk or an USB drive.  It also features a powerful plugin-based framework and  has more than 350 plugins in its arsenal. 

The Free Windows Instant Messenger supports almost all of the Windows versions, ranging from 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista  to the latest Windows 7.  The software supports the  AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Gadu-Gadu, IAX (Inter-Asterisk Exchange), ICQ, IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Jabber, MSN, Netsend, Tlen and the Yahoo protocol.

The interface and setup is a bit detailed, and hence may look  complicated, unlike other IM clients like Pidgin Portable, but the thing that would really make you happy is that the customization options available in it are far richer, when compared to the other softwares. The Free Desktop IM Client Miranda provides the capability for managing and organization of hundreds of IM buddies on many IM networks easily and supports contact renaming. It has a full message archive database and simple recall or deletion with the DB Tool or with the History Sweeper plugin.

The contact details or photos are visible with mouseover, but it needs an additional plugin to do this. Overall the Free Windows Instant Messenger is very much compact and portable, with a few necessary plugins and the history is saved on the hard disk by default which is quite useful.
