Free X Windows Server for Desktops – Download Free X Window Server Simulator XMing
XMing is a X Windows Server to Emulate Windows X Server on PC. Built for the microsoft windows envioronment, XMing provides, the X Window System display server, a set of traditional sample X applications and tools, and a set of fonts.
The software is feature rich and supports Mesa 3D, OpenGL, and GLX 3D graphics extensions capabilities, and just like the proprietary X win32 can be used for running graphical programs on remote Unix or Linux servers to Simulate X Windows Server.
The Free X Windows Server for Desktop Computers XMing , is based on the X.Org Server and is cross-compiled on Linux with the MinGW compiler suite and the Pthreads Win32 multi-threading library. XMing runs natively on Windows and does not need any third-party emulation software. XMing provides all the basic X windows Server functions, plus supports some more features, like, it lets you project your favourite X Window GUI applications onto the desktop. With the XMing, you can extend server-side X fonts to include any truetype fonts on your Windows machine which can be accessed, and added to the server font list.
A great feature of this software is that it can be used as a KVM substitute, which implies that there is no need put expensive hardwares. The XMing software can be used with “portablePuTTY” as a pocket PC X Server, by copying the files to a usb flash drive or, on the source disk.
Once made portable, no installed software or access to the Windows registry are needed. One thing I really liked about the Free Portable Putty Software to Connect Windows & Linux Computers is that, it stores the configuration data (sessions, ssh hostkeys) to files instead of the registry and, can work from existing registry entries which is really helpful in varied situations.
With XMing, you can display remote X clients directly on a Windows desktop without running a remote display manager and so free up the system resources used by that DM. It should be noted however that the use of XDMCP mode needs a remote DM running! The XMing X server can be used locally, or together with the coLinux, Cygwin, SFU (Microsoft Services for Unix) / SUA or UWIN.
Now, a word of caution before you Download X Windows Server on Microsoft Windows PC. The X Window Servers can be difficult and complex to start and use, and XMing is no different, I suggest you better start using it with XLaunch if you are relatively new in the arena. Although, there are an array of powerful features with this X Windows Server, it must be mentioned that the software learning curve still puts a great deal of challenge to the novice users out there.
This Free X Windows for MS Windows can be incredibly useful in situations where you want to access Linux (or Solaris, or Unix, FreeBSD, etc) from within the Windows envioronment. Unlike the Cygwin and the X win32, XMing is relatively easy on the system resources, compact, feature rich and stable.
