The Open Source PC Search Tool DocSearch is built on the Java language and needs the Java 1.5 or later runtime to properly work. To start searching you need to need to index the files in those directories that you want to search. It can be done by clicking “Index” and “Create new index” and you will be presented with a wizard to identify which files are to be indexed.

Indexing generally proceeds fairly rapidly. Once indexing is fully completed you can then start your search sessions. The user can also import and export indexes. This is particularly useful for implementing a unified search acccross the database.

Then there is ‘exporting’ that allows the user to share their search index with the other users. This  process is mainly for providing multiple web search archives in a single location, using a Lucene or DocSearcher servlet – but this facility works well enough with the client side as well which is great!

After you have decide to export your index, you need to click on “Index” and “Manage indexes”, and then check the export box next to the index you want to export and just click “Ok”. Immediately the DocSearcher will zip up the index, place it in its archive folder, and add an entry to a file called ‘archives.htm’ in that folder to hold the meta data for the index.

If an user wants  want to share their index they is also an option to publish the zip file and the archive.htm file onto the web (in the same folder) and send their friends a link of the zip archive. When they import that zip (link) in their DocSearcher application, their DocSearcher application will find the archives.htm file and automatically import the meta data (description, etc…) for the archived index.

Later on, if you want to update that imported index, you can click on “Index” and “Manage indexes”, then check the update box, and click “Ok”. DocSearcher will go check the archives.htm file to see if you’ve published an update – and if you have – it will retrieve the update.
